Common Injuries Associated With Slip-And-Fall Cases

by Kenneth Pierce

No one ever wants to believe their simple trip into the grocery store or their night out at a restaurant could result in an injury. However, even though businesses have a responsibility to maintain a safe facility, injuries can and do occur. Unfortunately, when injuries do occur, the person injured often has to get an attorney and file a personal injury claim just to get help paying for their injuries. Take a look at some of the most common injuries that can be caused by a slip-and-fall accident in a public place.

Broken or Fractured Bones

Of all of the injuries that can be sustained during a slip or fall, broken or fractured bones are probably the most common. Falling on a concrete floor, which is the most common type of floor in business settings, can easily cause broken or fractured bones. For example, you could break an ankle if you land in a certain way, or fracture your hip if you land hard enough on your side.

Head Injuries

If you fall in a public place, especially a store or restaurant where there are commonly shelves and fixtures, there is a high likelihood of hitting your head. A massive hit to the cranial area can cause everything from a concussion to skull fractures. In some cases, a major blow to the head can cause cervical spine injuries. Head injuries can be dangerous, and in some cases, they can cause severe pain and suffering.

Contusions

When you land hard on a hard surface due to a fall or you sustain a blow to your body, it causes damages to the blood vessels in that area of your body. The result is severe bruising or contusions. Contusions can seem like a minimal injury, but they can be extremely painful, and they can cause issues with swelling and inflammation that can contribute to other problems. For instance, if the swelling is too severe, the blood vessels will have a difficult time returning to their normal state, which can create circulatory issues.

Spinal Injuries

Less common but highly dangerous, spinal injuries can also come along with slip-and-fall incidents. Spinal injuries are more common when the fall occurs from some type of heightened surface, such as if you slip on an escalator or set of entry stairs. Cervical spine injuries, or injuries to the upper spine, are perhaps the most common. Whiplash, a fractured neck, and neck sprain or strain are a few examples.

About Me

Get Ahead in Your Personal Injury Case

As the sister of a law student, I thought that I could handle my own personal injury case when I was hit by a vehicle as I was walking across the street. Luckily, the car wasn't going very fast – but I did end up with a contusion and a broken leg. Turns out the process wasn't easy and I ended up hiring a lawyer. I learned a lot about the kind of information needed to win a personal injury case such as the kind of evidence that is effective and the types of documentation needed from the insurance company, employers, and even witnesses that were at the scene. My name is Rebecca, and I created this website to help guide you through your personal injury case. There is no reason for you to feel alone throughout the process, and I hope my insight helps you feel more empowered with your decision making.
