3 Questions To Ask Before You Hire A Real Estate Lawyer

by Kenneth Pierce

If you need the assistance of a real estate attorney, you want to make sure that you hire one that is going to be best suited to work on your particular case. You should always interview a real estate attorney before you hire them. Here are three questions that you can ask during your interview to make sure that you hire the right real estate attorney.

#1 Length Of Time Practicing

The first thing that you should ask is how long the real estate attorney that you are interested in hiring has been practicing law. This will allow you to see how much experience the attorney you are interviewing has in actually practicing law.

An attorney who only has a few years of experience practicing law could be perfect for reviewing a simple purchasing agreement for a single-family home. However, if you are working on a real estate deal for an entire neighborhood that you want to develop, you may want to go with an attorney who has a little more real-life experience in real estate law. Someone with more experience is more likely to pick up and notice any complications that may arise from such a big deal.

Keep in mind that you are probably going to face higher attorney fees the more experience the attorney you choose has.

#2 Experience With Your Type Of Case

Just asking how long an attorney has practiced law may not provide you with all information that you need. You should also ask them how many cases like yours that they have handled. You don't want to get a very vague answer like "I've done a lot of cases like this." Instead, you want a more specific answer, such as, "I handle and review about 10 real estate contracts per month, and I have been doing so for the past five years." The attorney you are interviewing should be able to tell you about how many type of cases like yours that they handle per month or per year.

#3 Case Strategy

An experienced real estate attorney will not only tell you how many cases that they have worked on, they will also go into detail about how they handle these cases. They should be able to give you a short run-down of the type of steps that it is going to take for the attorney to complete your case. This will let you see if the real estate attorney you are interviewing has the experience to rattle off case strategy off the top of their head.

Make sure that you are comfortable with the level of experience that the real estate attorney that you are interviewing has in the area of real estate law that you need assistance to. For simple real estate transactions, you don't need an attorney with a lot of experience, but for more complex transactions, hire someone who has either more years of experience or handles a lot of the type of cases that you need assistance with.

About Me

Get Ahead in Your Personal Injury Case

As the sister of a law student, I thought that I could handle my own personal injury case when I was hit by a vehicle as I was walking across the street. Luckily, the car wasn't going very fast – but I did end up with a contusion and a broken leg. Turns out the process wasn't easy and I ended up hiring a lawyer. I learned a lot about the kind of information needed to win a personal injury case such as the kind of evidence that is effective and the types of documentation needed from the insurance company, employers, and even witnesses that were at the scene. My name is Rebecca, and I created this website to help guide you through your personal injury case. There is no reason for you to feel alone throughout the process, and I hope my insight helps you feel more empowered with your decision making.
